Selection of U.S. Bankruptcy Judge, District of South Carolina

Friday, March 29, 2024

Please join Judges Gasparini and Burris, Chief Deputy Clerk Lauren T. Maxwell, and Court staff in congratulating L. Jefferson Davis, IV.

On March 29, 2024, the Circuit Executive announced the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit selected Jeff to fill the Bankruptcy Judge vacancy in the District of South Carolina, with a duty station in Charleston.

Jeff is a graduate of Winthrop University (B.A., 1999) and a cum laude graduate of the USC School of Law (J.D., 2002).  He practiced bankruptcy law for three years before joining the Court in 2005 as a career law clerk for Judge John E. Waites (ret.).  He has served the Court and the bankruptcy bar through his dedicated public service for over 19 years, moving to the position of Chief Deputy Clerk in 2008 and Acting Clerk of Court from 2012-2013.  In August 2022, Jeff was selected as Clerk of Court. Although he now works in an administrative capacity, he has continued throughout his career to lecture and study the law and has been a proven and reliable resource and partner to the judges of this Court while demonstrating superior leadership within the bar.

He will fill the vacancy that occurred when Judge David R. Duncan retired on May 31, 2023. The appointment is contingent upon completion of a successful background investigation before he will officially assume the new role, hopefully by late spring or early summer.

Congratulations Jeff!
